Tamarack Geese models have been traditionally made by Cree Indians to be used for decoys during hunting. Made by binding the fragrant twigs of the tamarack tree into a likeness of the Canada goose. Today, tamarack decoys are handmade by numerous artisan. The decoys consists of thin twigs, all about the same width ,bundled together into a goose shape with a wide body, narrow neck, and head.
These decoys remain a potent symbol of the Cree’s sustainable relationship with migratory waterfowl and their ingenuity in adapting traditional technology to contemporary art.
